  • Some questions and thoughts

    Written by chris / on 02/20/2010 / 2 Comments

I no longer play golf, even though I sometimes enjoy watching some of the tournaments on TV.  Incidentally, I was born at Pinehurst, N. C. and formally played all of those courses....free back in the 60's & 70's.

I've heard the term "Tiger proofing the courses."  Exactly, what does that mean?  I'm confused.  Aren't today's golf balls and clubs superior to those of just a decade ago, making it easier for more distance and perhaps better control?  How does the equipment of 2010 stack up to the same during the Nicklaus era?  If todays' equipment is better in ways, doesn't that mean ..

  • The Elephant in the Room

    Written by Jessica / on 12/01/2009 / 0 Comments

I feel obligated to post something about the elephant in the room: Tiger Woods was in a single car crash with a tree in front of his house, well after midnight, in the wee hours of Black Friday morning.

Of course, I don't have to tell you this, because every time Woods so much as sneezes, the entire nation hears about it (even my 87-year-old grandmother knows).

However, there are a few new developments: Woods has dropped out of the Chevron World Challenge, citing injuries from his crash. His sponsors, Nike and Gatorade, pledge to stand by their spokesman. Additionally, a ..

  • Thanksgiving, Golf, and Michigan: A Memoir

    Written by Jessica / on 11/25/2009 / 0 Comments

I saw this "memoir" of a Florida golfer who grew up in Michigan. It is tough to be a golfer in the Michigan winter! Happy Thanksgiving to all of our golfers; whether there is sunshine or snow where you live.

Lousy football, not golf, common thread to northern, southern Thanksgiving

    On tour in Southwest Florida

    Doug Oselett • November 25, 2009

    From the Ft. Myers News-Press

Happy Thanksgiving a day early to all you dedicated golfers. Thanksgiving in Florida sets up for what Thanksgiving should be. A day with family, good food, giving thanks and watching lousy football (Lions vs. ..

A great recap of the year. My favorite is #10, of course!

Best of '09: The top 10 moments of the season from pgatour.com

On the course, it was a year of breakthroughs, comebacks, major surprises and major disappointments. Off the course, it was a year when the TOUR -- and the golf world, period -- supported their own -- Amy Mickelson's battle with breast cancer, Ken Green's horrific accident and Chris Smith's tragic loss of his wife.

In a year of compelling moments, we offer you a look at our top 10:

  • Laird wins at Las Vegas

Laird wins a cool $756,000 at the Shriners PGA event in Las Vegas:

Martin Laird wins Shriners event in playoff

Las Vegas -- The higher the stakes, the calmer Martin Laird became.

Laird won the Justin Timberlake Shriners Hospitals for Children Open on Sunday for his first PGA Tour title, beating George McNeill with a birdie on the third hole of a playoff in the Fall Series event.

Laird closed with a 3-under-par 68 to match McNeill (67) and Chad Campbell (69) at 19-under 265. Campbell was eliminated on the second extra hole.

  • Comparing 1968's Jack Nicklaus to Today's Tiger Woods

     Interesting Q & A from Franklygolf.com:

    Who's Better: Tiger or Jack?

By Frank Thomas Posted: October 7, 2009

    Frank,

Thanks for sharing your insights and your book, Just Hit It, with those of us who appreciate a philosophical insight into the game and unbiased information about equipment. It is a wonderful service you provide to golfers.

My question relates to how equipment and technology have changed professional golf over the years, giving today's player a huge performance advantage over those players from 30 and 40 years ago. Because of the differences in equipment, can we really compare ..

  • Winter Golf - The Indoor Simulator

    Written by Jessica / on 10/06/2009 / 0 Comments

My fiance swears by the indoor golf simulator. How else would you ever get through the winter - 6 months without golf?

Simulators are a lot of fun, since you can play Pebble Beach and be $600 richer. They're pretty accurate as well, although some simulators don't do putting very well. Often, we'll just take a "gimmie" inside 10 feet. (It does wonders for your score!)

Westland Municipal is the only place that I know in Western Wayne County that has a simulator. Does anyone have a favorite "home simulator?"
